The movie is set to release in 2024 and once again features Chris Renaud in the role of the director, alongside Patrick Delage as co-director. The film’s writing was done by Mike White and Ken Daurio. Like its predecessors, this film also contains the signature elements of comedy, family love, and absurdity that defines this franchise.
Like always, Gru returned with a bigger family, more minion mayhem, and a new villain. The narrative serves as both a fresh take and a continuation, as new storylines are introduced to keep watching fans of the franchise engaged with the long-standing series, and to entice new younger viewers to adopt the franchise.
Plot Summary
The movie starts with Gru attending a high school reunion and running into a bizarre, and somewhat deranged, Maxime Le Mal, an ex- classmate turned bitter who uses cockroach DNA for potency enhancement. Maxime uses the grudge he holds against Gru to break free from Anti-Villain League custody and set the ball in motion for the anti-hero saga.
Now operating as a full-time family man and part-time secret agent, Gru is placed under witness protection along with his family, which includes Lucy, their adopted daughters Margo, Edith, Agnes, and the newest family member, baby Gru Jr., after Maxime swears revenge. With his peculiar cockroach-based technology, the villain seeks to kidnap Gru Jr. and transform him.
While concealing themselves in a remote suburban town, the family adjusts to their new life. They meet the keen Prescotts, an ambitious family residing next door. Their daughter, Poppy Prescott, becomes infatuated with Gru’s villainous past and encourages him to train her in villainy. Though he would prefer not to, Gru gets wrapped in Poppy’s plots, which involve breaking into their old school and stealing a honey badger mascot out of vengeance.
Little do they know, the missing mascot has a tracking device, which allows Maxime to find them. He and his partner, Valentina, make quick work of Gru’s safe house, successfully capturing Gru Jr. This leads to a complicated rescue mission complete with a flying car, rooftop hand-to-hand combat, and frantic Minion shenanigans.
A subplot is woven within the film about the ‘Mega Minions’, which refers to a quintet of Minions who were endowed with superhero-like abilities through a government sponsored experimental program. Although their antics cause severe comic pandemonium, they assist in the climactic battle.
In the last segments of the film, Gru fights Maxime in an incomplete tower where Juniper, now part-roach, gains the willpower to free himself and assist in the defeat of Maxime. With the Mega Minions and some of the local wildlife, the antagonists are triumphed over. Eventually, Juniper is returned back to his normal state and the family emerges from the ordeal much more united and stronger than before.
