“DogMan”, which first hit the big screen in 2023 has first been made in French and then translated into English and is an action thriller movie directed by Luc Besson. The film is further enhanced by the characterizations of Caleb Landry Jones, who plays Munrow Douglas also known as ‘Doug’, a man who has lost a lot of hope owing to the suffering and pain which he had to go through as a child, but is able to get through the day with the help of dogs and their strong bond with him. The film’s picture is set in the state of New Jersey and deals with a cross-section of themes ranging from abuse, pain along with the friendship of dogs and its affectionate nature.

Plot summary:

This comes during the police commanding Doug to pull over as he was found to have a truck load of dogs. He’s accused of doing a criminal activity. He is presented in front of a court which reintroduces Doug Munrow where this time Doug is getting judge appeal for a mental health screening from Dr. Evelyn Decker (Jojo T. Gibbs ). As the story reveals through repeating scenes, Doug Munrow had a traumatizing childhood where his father instead of treating or caring for him abused him, because of which he was placed in a home that harbored many dogs. In this light, Doug Munrow has had a troubled upbringing that was able to scar him for life but since he found the dogs as his family members he was able to live a happy life.

As the years have passed, Doug is an adult man that due to several tragic accidents has housed himself in a wheel chair, operates a non profitable entity that takes care of stray dogs. Not only this, Doug also puts on a drag show at a local cabaret and uses those moments to take quick brutal actions against local gangsters, thus backing up his more than solo quiet style of life. The storyline deep dives into his mental state, his past, and most importantly his journey moving on and also looking for justice during a time where the society was run by corruption.

Cast and Performances

Caleb Landry Jones – Doug Munrow: Jones brings life to Doug, infusing a sense of fragility even in the possible involvement of his dog partners. His performed role is commended for extreme feeling and realism.

Jojo T. Gibbs– Dr. Evelyn Decker: As the psychologist trying to uncover Doug’s past, Gibbs provides depth to Doug’s difficult character.

Christopher Denham – Agent Nelson: Denham represents the law enforcement who is drawn into Doug’s life which brings bout drama in the action.

Direction and Cinematography

Doug’s life is quite bleak, and there is the tendency to use subdued colors and surrounding and this is how Luc Besson has handled the execution of his responsibilities in “DogMan”. The intimate camera work and use of muted colors portrays the abjectness of Doug’s experience and increasing sorrow and torment. The addition of flashbacks by Besson establishes the past and present of the main figure aiding in demonstrating the levels of trauma Doug faces but also his strength to endure and fight.

Themes and Analysis

There are many themes taken into depth in the movie ‘DogMan’ like:

Abuse and Trauma: The movie focuses on the childhood scars that can never be erased and the lasting influences of childhood trauma.

Resilience and Survival: Doug’s relationship with dogs is a good reason to believe in human resilience and their insatiable will to bond with individuals for companionship in spite of the odds stacked against them.

Justice and Vigilantism: Doug engages with the local villains, and the treatment seeks to unveil the moral complexities related to justice and retribution.

Critical Reception:

“DogMan” hasn’t exactly been well received by critics. As per Rotten Tomatoes websites, the approval rating for this movie sits around 59% based on 71 reviews with an average rating of 5.5/10. According to the consensus, “While Besson, Landry Jones and a pack of mutts lend their roaring souls to DogMan, this entry offers ample creative risks and kibbled returns.”

Along with Metacritic, where they “score” the film a 45 out of 100 indicating that the reviews met “mixed or average” conditions.

And while some Jones’s keen performance is being recognized by critics, The Guardian observed that “he holds it together to some degree” albeit the fact that his movie is horrifically predictable.

There has been a successively produced body of work that critiques the film for the choices that were made throughout the narrative explaining that “this is a film so ridiculous with so many narrative holes.”

Box Office Performance:

As For Now As Of Today In 2023 Dogman Has Made $4.2 Million Domestic Even After The Release.

There seems to be a pattern here, the film barely grossed in the box office staying at $4.2 Million and along with it the film received quite a mediocre response, I guess an inadequate release and poor rating can make that happen.

Conclusion:

The film “DogMan” is an exploration of trauma, bittersweet introspection, and the inherent desire to seek justice. His riveting portrayal of a man who, in search for redemption, attempts to forge a relationship with dogs, sets the tone of the movie which stars Caleb Landry Jones. Even though the film has received varied reviews, it raises debate on issues such as abuse and humane nature of love.
