Title: Watchmen: Chapter II
Director: (A visionary like Denis Villeneuve or Alex Garland to continue Zack Snyder’s visual intensity and Alan Moore’s complexity)
Genre: Neo-Noir Superhero Drama
Tagline: “Who watches the Watchmen… when they’re gone?”
Setting the Stage
After the review of the gripping site of Watchmen (2009), in Chapter II one witnesses the evolution of new world being destroyed by Ozymandias’s hypocritical trick. What Adrian Veidt’s hoax did was make all nations strive for all fronts against an alien threat but now it appears dust is settling. Dr. Manhattan has gone leaving a colossal vacuum and as old bonds begin to collapse, new webs are up, the world of tomorrow is on the edge of disorder.
The plot alternates between what is happening now and what was, showing the consequences of the Watchman’s deeds with regard to the world and each other. Thematic for significant turning points include the reuse of ideas of the same kind, human violence, and the duality of good and evil, which poses ethical questions.
Synopsis
2040: In the wake of Viedt’s massive cry for the world to unite against the ‘alien’ threat, decades of peace are starting to be tense and unravel. His scenerio militarized society flees to the alien threat while globalist business establishments rise to control the population. Whispers of a resistance movement dubbed The Minute Hand who intend to disillusion the people to the massive lies whicheeredzaid , begin to surface.
Laurie Juspeczyk (Malin Akerman), although now retired and no longer with and separated from Dan Dreiberg (Patrick Wilson) investigates high-profile cases of masked vigilantes. She made an important discovery. Killers are present. These killers were the first enforcers of the Keen Act. Former police and military forces that have witnessed the emergence of active masked individuals hate the very core of its return.
On the other hand, Adrian Veidt (Jeremy Irons) lives in anger and depression in Australia watching the very world he saved descend into chaos. However, as threats begin to emerge, Adrian is forced to leave the shadows in order to find a way to protect the image and the very legacy he created. Manipulation was never out of the scenario.
In all this politics and conspiracy, the core driving force of everything is voyeuristic- Rorschach’s Journal. Now, it possesses the meaning of waving sovereignty and a naked call for world independence. A new appearance has come in the form of Rorschach’s mask although this time the identity of the wearer remains unseen; their previous and present intentions remain undetermined. They could either be a righteous avenger, a pretender or far more terrible.
Key Players
- Laurie Juspeczyk (Malin Akerman) Now a hardened investigator working for an underground watchdog group, Laurie has issues accepting the guilt she feels for aiding Veidt. Her story largely revolves around figuring out who she is while dealing with the complex history of her mother.
- Dan Dreiberg (Patrick Wilson) Dan is a recluse, struggling with ideals unfulfilled and trust betrayed. Three years after recovering from a nudge from Laurie, Dan has to maintain a non-violent stance amidst the growing intensity of the new age of masked vigilantes.
- Adrian Veidt (Jeremy Irons) Seeing these horrors unfold before him awakens a level of maniacal egotism never before seen – with narcissism comes paranoia. His arrogance is challenged once again by even more madness.
- The New Rorschach (John Boyega) Using this ‘Rorschach’ mask and attitude, this peculiar character enrages half the population and captivates his followers. However, this Rorschach, unlike Kovacs, comes off more technology driven with energy and stamina directed towards young teenagers- what they seek and why is still a mystery.
- Dr. Manhattan (CGI with a voice by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) Without an apparent presence, little perhaps can be said of the many factors which drive Manhattan in the film. Strange happenings in the past and cinematic flashbacks combine frighteningly enough, to suggest he’s been further involved with Earth than anticipated.
- Angela Abar / Sister Night (Regina King) Angela opens the story quite undemocratically as she hurries into the party just to destroy Veidt’s plans and retrieve Andy’s remnants. Angela, on the other hand, does show willingness to cooperate, now having quite a unique perspective which incorporates assistance and participation in important international happenings.
