Synopsis
The American Cold War setting sets a stage for the Soviet Union and KGB operations in Middle America where they have built up an ideal American town for their operations known as “Indian Springs” in Nebraska which is a complete lie. This makes the residents of the town mimic the classic American life of the 50’s but in the reverse, where American culture is being modeled. Yet as the American culture progresses, the portrayal of the culture in the town builds becomes a drawback.
KGB agent Cameron Smith (Charles Martin Smith) enlists New York dance club couple Travis (John Travolta) and Wendell (Arye Gross) with a plan of idiocy dressing as a parody of amusement. With intent to integrate New Yorks nightclub culture into the mix, Smith convinces the pair with the prospects of nightclub in Nebraska only to land them in the middle of a KGB idiocy wherein they travel inside Soviet Union stripping them off their Japanese pop culture with the intent of revamping the nightclub in the process. The concept of a pop culture, available only in 1980 was an irony considering Smiths goal of wanting to change American society into one with a toned down culture.
The Smith’s plan worked in its favor as with the passage of time, Smith gets acquainted with more locals, gets infatuated by two people Bonnie (Kelly Preston) and Jill (Deborah Foreman) this is where the twist begins, as Smith starts changing the town, the people began planning to celebrate Independence day in heated secrecy. This quickly raised a red flag for the attendees grabbing attention of Mr. Jones (Brian Doyle-Murray) a conservative and Sparks (Rick Ducommun) a gleeful minister.
The pivotal moment comes when Travis and Wendell deal with the fact that they are in the Soviet Union. This happens after they happen to find a military base where Russian is being spoken around. Realizing the situation, they Turn to Bonnie and Jill for help. Bonnie claims to really love Travis and assures them that she will assist them while Jill betrays them to the government. After being arrested, Travis and Wendell meet Yuri in prison, a pilot who was captured for assisting in the modernization of the place.
When faced with a firing squad Travis and Wendell were forced to disown America. Instead, they speak the language of principle and fight for what is right in a way that impresses the Townsmen including agent Smith and Bonnie. During the fight the group managed to subdue the kgb officers and fled the town using Yuri’s plane and became American defectors.
Former Soviet Townspeople adjust well in New York and enjoy their freedom. However, this makes Travis think about how and where they lived and makes him consider the fact that being in a comfy environment was not ideal. They move on, this time going to an authentic southern town in Nebraska where they seamlessly blend in the American culture.
